Research question

Which companies were named on the most U.S. recall notices in 2025, across the FDA, CPSC and NHTSA records in the PlainRecalls index?

Methodology

Firm rankings are read live from the PlainRecalls SQLite database at page-render time. The recalls table is filtered to 2025 by SUBSTR(date_reported, 1, 4), joined to the manufacturers entity on manufacturer_id, grouped by firm, and counted. The category breakdown applies the same 2025 filter and joins to the categories table. Counts are distinct recall events attributed to the firm named on each notice, not units affected, fines, or severity.

The list mixes food producers, contract pharmacies, and medical-device makers, a reminder that recall frequency tracks the kind of business a company is in, not how dangerous it is. A food firm shipping fresh prepared meals issues a recall every time one ingredient batch is flagged; a device maker does so for each affected product line. Across all firms, medical devices was the largest recall category in 2025.

Coverage

Counts are read from the PlainRecalls SQLite database when the page loads. The recalls table is filtered to 2025 on the reporting year in date_reported, joined to the manufacturers entity, and grouped by firm. Company names are shown as the agency recorded them, with all-caps notices title-cased for readability. Each firm links to its full recall history. The index covers FDA, CPSC, and NHTSA recalls; it holds no USDA FSIS records.

What this analysis cannot tell us

A recall count is a count of events, not a safety verdict. Large, diversified firms accumulate more recalls by scale alone, more product lines mean more chances for a recall in any year. Heavily-inspected categories (drugs, devices, food) generate more notices than lightly-inspected ones. Firm names follow the agency notice, so a parent and its subsidiary may appear as separate entries. The index holds no USDA FSIS records, so meat and poultry firms are out of scope.
